Sneak Peak: New Item!

I am so excited to bring you a completely brand new item in the Rock Paper Stitch shop.

Weaving Looms for Kids!

My dad started designing these a few years ago, but they just didn't seem quite right to me at the time. Much of the struggle came from trying to stain the maple wood. We decided to use a non-toxic, kid-safe paint this time and the colors are dazzling. (So if your toddler starts gnawing on it, the paint won't harm them.)

I intend to create a whole line of wonderful colors. Until then we are starting with 4 colors in pink, purple, blue (not shown) and the natural finish. As far as I know, there are no wooden looms in fun colors kids like. Other looms on the market are unfinished pine or fancy cardboard looms made of plastic.

What's even better about my looms is all of the wood we use is locally and sustainably sourced, with no toxic chemical treatments sprayed on the wood.

Each loom will come in it's own box as a kit to teach kids how to weave. Included in the box will be the handmade loom in the color of your choice, a weaving and small tapestry needle, a handmade booklet explaining how to weave and some yarn to start the first project.

Here is an example of using yarn and fabric strips to create a piece of wall art or placemat.

Additional yarn packs will also be available. Each pack will include a coordinating mix of yarn and ribbon. Since many people send my looms as gifts to family in another part of the country, this will make it easy for gift giving. It also brings the price of the loom down, in case you want to provide your own yarn.

You will find my kids weaving kits and yarn packs in my shop in a week or two.

Wholesale Information:
In addition to selling these in my etsy shop, I am also offering these for wholesale buyers. If you are interested in wholesaling my looms you can send me an email from my profile.

We Survived!

We did it! We made it a whole year with our little one. It's been a very tough year. Enough to say I'm not sure I can handle having another baby for a long while, if it all.

We threw together a little party with some family and had a great time. I thought for sure she would cry the whole time.

Instead she seemed to really enjoy the open, bright space of my grandparents lake house and playing with her cousins.

Here is the invite I created.

I made her dress using Micheal Miller's Children at Play fabric. The matching top hat is a just a hair clip. I knew she wouldn't want something stretched around her neck.

I wanted to go overboard with balloons. My ambitions were a little too high, but I still liked my table decor idea. Balloon "bouquets" and scattered balloons. I made these with water balloons and skewers. Just poke the tie end of the balloon through the skewer and pull through to the flat end. There are 4 balloons to each skewer.

Her cake is a healthy, sugar free banana and blueberry cake I got from this website. I'll happily make this again, in place of banana bread, when I have over ripe bananas. It is quite good.

Life & Shop Updates

African American Mother and Baby Print by claudine

Since it's been awhile since I've posted anything I figured people might be wondering what's up. As you may remember from a few months back I explained my struggle in raising my daughter. Back then we just found out she is high needs.

Recently, two people mentioned to us getting her evaluated for sensory processing disorder. At 10 months she's still a bad sleeper. We still have to help her fall asleep and she wakes frequently. She also dislikes diaper changes, baths and clothes being pulled over her head. She's always in motion and is unable to just sit and relax. It takes a lot of energy to keep up with her. Although we are seeing improvement in the day to day as she gets older.

One huge accomplishment we were recently able to do was to get her to sleep in her bed. Since birth she had been sleeping in her swing or sometimes her bouncer chair. Then she caught the flu and woke every 15min- 1hr, and continued this pattern for two weeks. Out of desperation I decided to try something new.

Yeah, this looks more like us.

In her room we use a Montessori style floor bed. This allows us to lay next to her and do what we can to keep her calm until she falls asleep. This includes reading books, singing to her and feeding her a bottle. It can take anywhere from 30min- 1hr for her to fall asleep. Then she usually stays asleep for 2- 2 1/2 hours at a time. So far some nights have been every hour. After 4 or 5am she is still difficult to keep asleep, at which time she goes back into her bouncer chair.

The bed is working very well. Even with the hourly wakings it's not as bad as it used to be. In the past we had to bounce or aggressively rock her to sleep. This would take 15min or more when she woke up. Now I just give her a bottle. It's the only thing that comforts her enough to fall back to sleep when she's in the bed, but it only takes a few minutes. By morning I feel a little more rested than I used to.

What does that mean for the shop? Most of my day is caring for my little one. I work here and there as she allows me, but my pace is not where it used to be pre-baby days. Even if things get silent around here I want you to know I'm still here and still working.

Currently, I've been working on more star and heart pillows. They're coming along slowly, but they're coming along. I also have plans to stock more baby bibs and birthday banners. Then hopefully by the end of all that I'll be able to work out some new items. :)
